
Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy was born on August 20, 1946, in Mysore, Karnataka, India. He studied electrical engineering at the National Institute of Engineering, University of Mysore, and subsequently at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur for his M. Tech.
Before founding Infosys, Murthy worked as a principal systems programmer at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad and Patni Computer Systems in Pune (Maharashtra).
He created Infosys in 1981 and served as its CEO until 2002 when he was appointed chairman. He maintained that position until 2011, then took a two-year break before returning as Infosys’ executive chairman last June.
Murthy’s return is motivated by his desire to restore the $7.3 billion (revenues) corporation to its former grandeur. He is known as the “Father of Indian IT” and now heads the firm with his son Rohan, who has a Ph.D. in computer science from Harvard.
